Fall knows how to make an entrance in the Lehigh Valley. The trees put on a spectacular show, the air turns crisp, and your yard looks ready for a postcard.

Then November arrives. Those gorgeous leaves are everywhere, the flower beds need attention, and winter is approaching with absolutely no regard for your landscaping plans.

Before you retire the rake, here’s how to give your outdoor space a proper send-off.

1. Give Those Leaves a New Assignment

A thick layer of wet, matted leaves can smother your lawn and encourage turf problems. But don’t banish every leaf from the property!

Shred healthy leaves with your mower or use them as mulch in planting beds. They’ll gradually break down, adding organic matter to the soil.

For Bath and Nazareth homeowners surrounded by mature trees, a little strategic leaf management goes a long way.

2. Give Your Plants a Little Winter Protection

Think of mulch as a winter coat for your planting beds. A layer around two to three inches deep helps moderate soil temperatures and conserve moisture.

Just keep it away from trunks and stems. Mulch piled against bark can encourage decay.

And resist the urge to cut everything back. Healthy perennial stems and seed heads can provide winter interest and wildlife habitat. Remove diseased growth, but save unnecessary pruning for the appropriate season.

3. Don’t Let Your Evergreens Go Thirsty

Evergreens may look unfazed by the cold, but they continue losing moisture through their foliage.

During dry autumn stretches, water newly planted trees and shrubs as needed while the soil remains unfrozen. Avoid saturating already wet ground.

This is especially important in exposed Allentown and Bethlehem landscapes, where winter winds can increase moisture loss.

4. Give Your Patio a Prewinter Inspection

Your patio has hosted enough autumn gatherings. Now it deserves a little maintenance.

Clear debris from walkways, check for loose pavers, and watch for drainage problems. Water collecting around hardscaping can cause trouble during repeated freezing and thawing.

If your property has an irrigation system, arrange proper winterization before sustained freezing temperatures arrive.
